A new design system for a generative AI platform

Overview

Orson is the first generative AI platform created to enhance human connection by facilitating the sharing of one's authentic self through video storytelling. Despite its compelling mission, Orson faced significant challenges within the platform’s design system that hindered its potential.

Background

As a “story-as-a-service” startup, Orson was designed to integrate with partner platforms and communities to create product extensions and new revenue streams that increase user engagement through a fully automated process. In June of 2023, Orson announce it had raised over $3 million.

The problem

9 different blues? Oh my… Orson had a problem: its design system was in disarray. On a very basic level, it felt antiquated and disjointed especially when compared to the platform's innovative technology and aspirations. It also lacked consistency, efficiency and scalability.

Goals

  • To spearhead a well-implemented design system leading to a more efficient workflows, improved product quality, and better user experiences

  • To ensure inclusivity through the introduction of accessibility standards

  • To provide a flexible foundation poised for seamless updates and iterations in response to evolving needs and emerging trends.

Colors

At the request of the CEO and Founder, who sought inspiration from the ocean's vivid hues, I worked to develop a color palette that would represent life, energy, and the boundless possibilities of the future.

The selected palette prioritized contrast ratios, color brightness, and color combinations that would enhance readability and usability for all users. Selecting colors - electric blues, neon greens, and radiant purples - that worked well in both dark and light mode was also crucial for ensuring a seamless user experience across different viewing environments and branded media types.
