A product discovery platform

Overview

In 2016, ECRM’s private equity board requested a cost benefit analysis for building an internal product discovery platform.

The problem

As the Lead Designer, I was tasked with creating a high-fidelity prototype for the upcoming analysis. The board meeting was just around the corner. Collaborating closely with the Chief Architect was essential. Our tag-team effort ensured the prototype aligned with the big-picture goals of the impending presentation and a possible call for immediate development. Striking this balance demonstrated the prototype's potential but also showcased its readiness, contributing to a well-informed and strategic decision-making process.

Impact

We knew there would be one of two decisions made - the immediate development of the prototype or the acquisition of the leading competitor. In a strategic move, ECRM’s PE board decided to acquire the leading competitor. Although the product library prototype was celebrated for its potential and impactful role in shaping the decision, securing funds for this acquisition reflected a faster pathway to establishing market leadership.

Initially, I was disappointed but there was a bright side. Following the merger, the positive impact of the prototype could still be felt.

The Event Suggestion feature built within the prototype’s communication tool evolved into a dynamic addition within the acquired platform. Leveraging the prototype's user-friendly approach and advanced recommendation algorithms, the new feature became instrumental in suggesting events tailored to the specific needs and detailing the meeting preferences of both buyers and suppliers. This optimization not only deepened user engagement but also positioned the acquired platform as an integral part of ECRM’s value and product offerings.
